NASUWT: Survey Analysis and Insights

What NASUWT needed

The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) regularly surveys its members on key issues affecting teachers. These include the annual Pay Survey, which explores pay and financial concerns; the Big Question Survey, which covers teacher experiences, concerns, and job satisfaction; and the Wellbeing Survey, which examines members’ experiences related to health and wellbeing. Given the vast amount of data these surveys generate, the NASUWT wanted to extract the most valuable insights to support their campaigns and policy interventions.

What we did

We processed and cleaned survey data captured from NASUWT members, often exceeding 10,000 responses and presented the analysis within purpose-built interactive Tableau dashboards. This allowed union staff and members of the public to explore how different groups of teachers responded to key issues and how trends evolved over time. To add further depth to the analysis, we weighted the survey results to ensure they were representative of the wider teacher workforce and linked survey data to external demographic and social datasets, such as the census, using school postcodes provided by respondents. This provided additional context and helped uncover patterns that would not otherwise be evident from the survey data alone. Additionally, we performed statistical analysis to highlight significant differences in responses between different groups, removing noise and ensuring insights were both meaningful and actionable. Beyond the quantitative analysis, we conducted free-text analysis on open-ended survey responses, identifying key themes and emerging trends that might otherwise go unnoticed.

To maximise the impact of our findings, we also delivered briefings to key NASUWT teams, equipping them with a clear understanding of the data and how best to utilise the interactive dashboards to inform their decision-making, campaigns, and interventions.

The impact of our work

Our analysis and interactive dashboards provide the NASUWT with a clear, data-driven view of how their members feel about a wide range of issues, helping them identify key concerns, track trends over time, and shape evidence-based campaigns and interventions. Frequently cited in annual reports and evidence submissions, our analysis strengthens their advocacy for better teacher conditions. By transforming complex survey data into actionable insights, we enable the NASUWT to effectively communicate teachers’ experiences to policymakers, the media, and the wider public – ensuring their members’ voices are heard and amplified.
