Last week Steve Preston, Director of Mime, was invited to speak at the ODI Summit on a panel chaired by Martha Lane Fox on ‘Open Data for Social Good’. Steve was joined on the panel by Gail Ramster, creator of The Great British Public Toilet Map and Will Perrin, Founder of Talk About Local. In a wide ranging and fascinating discussion, the panel explored advances in open data, and the ramifications of these advances across sectors and across borders.
Steve’s focus was on the importance of open data within the education sector. He spoke about how lucky we are in the UK to have so much data within the sector which is widely available. The challenge is to use it in a meaningful and useful way. Mime’s own Skills Route, the Nesta Open Data challenge winner, has been able to make use of datasets that are widely available to improve the decision making capabilities of young people and their parents at a crucial time in their educational lives.
