3 steps to get your data ready for SEND inspection

Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will look at the information you use to track the performance of your SEND services. Your data should be timely, comprehensive and integrated into the running of your service. You need to be able to understand how you are doing on a regular basis. Inspection reports have identified weaknesses in the management information of SEND services. They highlight that: Where limited data or analysis exists, leaders are unable to identify the impact of their service on children with SEND Some authorities do not have enough information for planning and commissioning of services for…

Year 12 student applies learning to a work environment with Mime

Post written by Fletcher Pearmaine, Year 12 student at Pimlico Academy. I am currently in year 12 and studying maths, physics, and computer science. I wanted to get an understanding of how computing skills such as data analysis and computational thinking is applied in the working environment. I chose to take a weeks work experience at Mime as they handle tasks such as data analysis and web development, which I am interested in. One of my roles at Mime was to test a website being developed to point out issues and bugs. The website is called Future Folio which is an…

Help your students find local schools and colleges that offer the courses they want with Skills Route

We are experts in education data. We have built Skills Route to make this data accessible to young people to help them make informed decisions. Skills Route FIND is a new tool to help young people find local schools and colleges that offer the courses that they want to study after GCSEs. It uses information that providers have shared with the DfE about the courses they offer through the Post-16 Course Directory. This is combined with contact information, Ofsted ratings and directions from home to give a young person all the information they need to decide whether to explore the school or…

London loses in proposed schools funding formula

The Government are consulting on a new funding formula for schools. It will determine school budgets on a consistent basis nationally. The largest proportion of funding (72.5%) will be based on the number of pupils in a school. However, the new formula also recognises deprivation, low prior attainment of the pupils, pupils with English as an additional language, mobility, sparsity of population as well as some fixed running costs and adjustments for regional variation in costs. There is no new money attached to the proposals. The new formula distributes the same level of money in a different way creating winners…

An internship with Mime

Written by George Karkera who worked as a Consulting Intern in November and December 2016 After finishing my Physics degree and undertaking some postgraduate research, I decided I wanted to explore the world outside of science. I had a real interest in education, particularly educational disadvantage. But I also wanted to make use of some of the skills I had gained through my scientific background. The internship with Mime presented the perfect opportunity to use my data analysis and computing skills in an educational context, where I could make a difference to the life chances of young people. 'It was…

Making sense of study options after GCSEs

Skills Route exists to help young people make informed decisions about what to study after GCSEs so that they can set great foundations for the future. We do this by providing tailored suggestions to each young person for what to study, and where. We base these suggestions on the information that they share with us - for now it’s primarily their academic ability, their interests and their life goals. Anecdotally, we often hear that schools struggle to share and explain all the options to young people. There are a myriad of reasons for this - the incentives that exist to…
