Carney’s Community: Helping young people be the best they can be

We have joined forces with an amazing charity - Carney's Community. Carney's Community gets disadvantaged and excluded young people off the street and away from a life of crime and despair by giving them skills, discipline and self-respect. "Helping young people be the best they can be" - Carney's Community Their approach, inspired by boxing legend Mick Carney, is unusual and particularly resource-intensive but ultimately effective because they recognise that creating lasting change takes time, hard work and dedication. Their work reduces offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. An internship with Mime

Before starting teacher training this September I have been working as an intern at Mime. I wanted to do something which was related to education and when I saw Mime’s work I thought it looked really interesting and got in touch. I have had really varied work here and learnt a lot about using data in education. I had no idea there was so much publicly available data, or how to make it useful for answering questions about schools or cohorts of pupils. I found helping on a report about London’s student’s post-16 routes really interesting. I like Mime’s emphasis…

DfE Data Release Breakdown: EHCPs in England

Find out how Local Authorities (LAs) compare on SEND indicators from the recent DfE EHCP data release The DfE recently published statistics from local authority SEN2 2019 data returns, providing a wealth of information on young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in England. If a child or young person has severe SEND they can be issued with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). This gives schools access to additional funding to support the young person. Much of this SEN2 data released sets the scene for the number of young people with EHCPs, broken down by age and local…

As our country goes through a period of uncertainty it has become even more important that we continue legacy-building work focusing on improving education for current and future generations. This will ensure that opportunities are afforded to all children and young people (CYP) – not removed – which is why we are so keen to use data to inform the…

Non academic tracking in special schools SEND & Inclusion

Non academic tracking in special schools

Developing special educational needs (SEN) pupils is not just about supporting and demonstrating academic progress. Digital technology and pupil development frameworks can be combined to make a difference to every child. Pupils with special educational needs (SEN) often operate well below the national expectations for their age.  But these ‘expectations’ are largely based entirely on academic performance.  Whilst academic frameworks such as P Scales or PIVAT are useful for these pupils they don’t measure the full range of SEN pupils’ development and they don’t provide a basis or foundation to support staff in schools to continuously track their pupils’ progress…
