Mime Consulting at the ODI Summit

Last week Steve Preston, Director of Mime, was invited to speak at the ODI Summit on a panel chaired by Martha Lane Fox on 'Open Data for Social Good'. Steve was joined on the panel by Gail Ramster, creator of The Great British Public Toilet Map and Will Perrin, Founder of Talk About Local. In a wide ranging and fascinating discussion, the panel explored advances in open data, and the ramifications of these advances across sectors and across borders. Steve's focus was on the importance of open data within the education sector. He spoke about how lucky we are in the…

Education Open Data Challenge update – Skills Route through to the final

Following a weekend of consultation, refinement and website development we are delighted by the latest news from the Open Data Challenge. After a successful pitch by Steve, Skills Route was chosen as one of the three finalists and move forward through the incubation phase with project support from a host of subject matter experts. The whole weekend proved to be really exciting and we particularly enjoyed watching everyone’s ideas come together in the final pitches. It was incredibly useful meeting with the parents from Haringey who generously gave up their time to provide direct project feedback. They were all really…

Skills Match approved for the Open Data Breakthrough Fund

Together with London Councils Young People Education and Skills team Mime have successfully bid for funding from the BIS Open Data Breakthrough Fund to develop an online tool to bring skills and labour market intelligence together. Skills Match will bring skills data and labour market data together to enable policy-makers, practitioners, particularly careers advisers in schools and colleges, and employers to take an intelligence-led, geographically specific approach to addressing youth unemployment in London. This will act as an extension to our existing Intelligent London website, which helps to make open data accessible to policy makers. We are currently undergoing the…

Nesta – Education Open Data Challenge

We are pleased to announce that, following a successful competition entry, we have been invited to attend the creation weekend for Nesta’s Educational Open Data Challenge. Having been set the brief, our team came up with the idea for “Skills Route” which is an app that uses open data on the post-16 performance of schools and colleges in different subjects to allow parents and young people to identify providers in their area at which they are likely to achieve their goals by age 18. Skills Route shows projected grades in their chosen subjects and, in turn, the higher education options that…

EYFS Tracker at the 2013 Childcare Expo

Last week we had a great couple of days on our stall at the Childcare Expo in Coventry meeting new and existing users of the EYFS Tracker. The event was really well attended and we had lots of interest in the Tracker from schools, nurseries and childminders alike. It was also a great opportunity to meet other companies working in the childcare sector, including potential partners (as well as looking for toys for our kids!) Thanks to Broadway Events for organising such a successful event.

Assessing children’s progress in primary schools

Our Director, Steve, was recently invited by NFER to contribute to a group discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of the systems used to assess the progress of pupils in primary schools. Despite some flaws in the existing system, it was stressed that there is an important place for data and analysis when part of a national framework. However, it is unwise to look solely at attainment figures as this fails to account for the starting abilities of children in some areas and the idea that progress should play a central role in this data analysis is clearly important. Steve…
