Providing an on-the-day results service for schools

Schools want comparative data as soon as the GCSE and A Level results are available. They want to understand how their results compare to other local schools. But it is not a straightforward process to get comparable data in such a tight timescale. We have provided an on-the-day results service for schools for the last 11 years and have some lessons to share on how to do it well. Introduction There is great interest in the performance of local schools on GCSE and A Level results days. Schools, the local authority, Councillors, parents and the press all want to know…

DfE Data Release Breakdown: EHCPs in England

Find out how Local Authorities (LAs) compare on SEND indicators from the recent DfE EHCP data release The DfE recently published statistics from local authority SEN2 2019 data returns, providing a wealth of information on young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in England. If a child or young person has severe SEND they can be issued with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). This gives schools access to additional funding to support the young person. Much of this SEN2 data released sets the scene for the number of young people with EHCPs, broken down by age and local…

The Gap Years: Understanding the Median Gender Pay Gap

Of the 50 organisations reporting the largest gender pay gaps in March 2018, almost half were multi-academy trusts. A startling statistic. Since organisations were required to publish information on their gender pay gap in 2018, the discussion around gender inequality in the workplace has ramped up a level. It seems fairly astonishing that this is still an issue, and as a data-driven consultancy with equality at the heart of all we do, we felt we should address this topic and see how data can help us figure out what’s going on to cause such a disparity. The conversation about fair…

What’s happened to Attainment 8 scores this year? Analysis, Insight Reports & InfographicsSchool Improvement

What’s happened to Attainment 8 scores this year?

Are you looking at Attainment 8 scores and wondering why the 2017 results are so much lower than 2016? The new GCSE grading structure means that Attainment 8 scores in 2017 will be lower than 2016 for the same performance. The overall impact of this nationally is to reduce the average points scored by over 11% or a reduction of approximately 5 points in Attainment 8 scores. To get a year-on-year comparison, 2016 results should be rebased using the 2017 scores. Background The Government introduced the revised GCSE grades to provide greater granularity in the higher grades. They wanted to…

3 steps to get your data ready for SEND inspection

Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will look at the information you use to track the performance of your SEND services. Your data should be timely, comprehensive and integrated into the running of your service. You need to be able to understand how you are doing on a regular basis. Inspection reports have identified weaknesses in the management information of SEND services. They highlight that: Where limited data or analysis exists, leaders are unable to identify the impact of their service on children with SEND Some authorities do not have enough information for planning and commissioning of services for…

Learning lessons on the performance of primary pupils through secondary education from longitudinal data

Our work tracking a cohort of primary pupils through to A-levels or equivalent found that a primary school’s performance at Key Stage 2 (KS2) often does not equate to success of those pupils in their secondary school. To improve the life chances of their pupils, primary and secondary schools need to understand the combined impact of their education. Background to the review We have undertaken a review of longitudinal data from the National Pupil Database (NPD) in partnership with Southwark Council and the Southwark Teaching Schools Alliance (STSA). A number of Southwark primary schools wanted to understand their impact on…

Level 3 transition matrices – 2015/16

We have recently updated our popular Level 3 value-add visualisation, based on the latest DfE published data from 2016 results. The analysis spans A Levels, AS Levels and a wide range of other Level 3 academic and vocational qualifications, across a huge range of subjects. The interactive visualisation is available here.  Start by choosing the qualification and subject combination from the drop-downs on the left and the outcomes for that qualification are presented as stacked bar charts split out by…
